ABOUT HUNTER

MY STORY

I still remember the night I wanted to become involved in media. I was watching the 1997 NCAA Football National Championship game between the Tennessee Volunteers and Nebraska Cornhuskers. While my parents watched from the comfort of the family room couch, I settled underneath our dining room table with a marker board propped against the legs. Instead of listening to Sean McDonough call the game on ABC with his color commentator Terry Donahue, I decided - like any third-grade child - to play "pretend." I imagined I was in McDonough's place, calling the championship game with Scott Frost leading the Huskers. I kept score on my marker board. It was then, watching Nebraska beat Peyton Manning and Tennessee, I knew I wanted to get involved in journalism.

Having big radio dreams early, I applied for my first radio job in the sixth grade at KSID Radio, Inc. in my hometown of Sidney, Neb. Too young to join the staff then, I decided to do other odd jobs, such as bag groceries and mow lawns. During my junior year of high school, I joined KSID as a part-time on-air host and producer. I've been involved in radio and media ever since.

After graduating from Sidney High School, I majored in broadcasting, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications and a minor in Business Administration at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

My radio career continued while I attended UNK. I hosted on-air shifts on KRNY and KQKY in Kearney, Neb., assisted with promotions and production, and participated in several live events.

I took my first full-time job at KSID in 2012 and spent two years as the station's Program Director and Morning Show Host.

I was offered a new opportunity with Flood Communications, Inc. and moved to Nebraska City in June 2014 to begin working as the Program Director and Morning Show Host at KBIE-FM and KNCY-AM. I was promoted to Operations Manager in 2016 and remained in the position until 2019.

Ever since watching the 1997 national championship game, I had a dream of managing my hometown radio station in Sidney. In 2020, Flood Communications bought KSID Radio, Inc. and promoted me to Station Manager, allowing me to return to my first radio station and help me achieve one of my main career goals.

THE BURN

The first time I had an on-air shift was at KSID. I hosted a weeknight and weekend show. Listening to radio since I was a kid and hearing all the different show names, I decided I should create one for myself. After going through a couple of names, "The Drive Home" and "Hunting with Hunter," I landed on the name "The Burn." The show name has stuck with me through my 15+ year career in radio, from Sidney to Kearney, to Nebraska City back to Sidney. It has become more than a show name. It has become my brand in media, with an original show logo to match the persona. Listeners, student-athletes and city leaders recognize me more as "The Burn" than by my actual name. Even close friends introduce me as "The Burn." I use the show name on-air, as well as off-air on social media sites, such as Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat (@TheBurnRadio).
